Food Glorious Food

My husband and I love to people watch. One of my husband’s sadistic pleasures on a cruise vacay is to watch the people gorging themselves in the ship’s buffet.

There’s the breakfast buffet, lunch buffet, dinner buffet, morning and afternoon teas in the cafe, midnight buffet, the free 24 hour pizza, hotdog stands, food making and tasting in speciality dining rooms and of course, if you’re still looking for more, there’s always room service.

No matter which ship you’re on; whether a 3 star or 5 star, American or English ship, small boutique ships or large mega-liners, it never takes long before you pass a smorgasbord of tasty temptations.

Onboard a cruise ship you cannot escape it.   There is no diet.  You can hit the gym, you can take the stairs, you can walk the sports deck or join a sunrise yoga class, but cruise food, my dear readers, always seems to outweigh all efforts to avoid the unwanted cruise kilos.

What fascinates my husband is the way the buffet is turned into a daily sport.  All you can eat until you either puke or go ride out your food coma curled up on a deck chair.  What’s even more amazing is seeing those same people reappear in the Main Dining Room only hours later.   How do they do it?

Whether you’re out to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth, or simply out enjoying the fact that you don’t have to wash the dishes afterwards, be mindful of your intake people…  The Cruise Kilo phenomenon is not a myth !

How to grab a great cruise deal

I get asked a lot about how to hook a good cruise deal, so I have some tips to share;

Tip 1: When you’re on your next cruise, book your next cruise !! There’s some great opportunities to score OBC to spend on your current cruise, and discounted deposits for your future one.

Tip 2: if you have a family of 5 or 6 consider family rooms like the awesome Panoramic Family rooms on Explorer and Voyager of the Seas. Very reasonable prices for what you’re getting. If you have the budget consider splurging on a 2 bedroom suite for added luxury and comfort.

Tip 3: if you’re not going to drink yourself silly every day on the cruise then you should consider which drink package option is best for you. Just because it has drinks included it may not be a good fare..

Tip 4: Yes special occasion cruises may have a sale last minute but why spend the whole year worried about whether you’ll get on. Unless you’re genuinely spontaneous, take any room kind of person then it’s not worth waiting to the end.

Tip 5: cruises are like flights and accommodation.. they go up and down according to type and demand. The fares can decrease as they clear out any unpaid groups etc but will mostly increase.

Tip 6: get a group together (8x twin rooms) and hit your agent up for a group rate and anything else the cruise line can offer!

Tip 7: don’t go in school holidays if you want a cheap price. Just after them are often better value for money.

Tip 8: subscribe to your agent’s deals list and allow them to send them to your inbox.

Tip 9:  ask your agent if you can pay it off without extra fees

Tip 10: if you can’t afford it now, go later! Give yourself something to look forward to and don’t pressure yourself into a cruise you’re not financially ready for.

Captain Crush

Whilst onboard the super mega-liner Ovation of the Seas for a short 3 night cruise, I set out to madly explore one of the world’s largest ships in a relatively short amount of time.  Oh, did I mention there were around 4,500 others onboard all trying to do the same thing..

Needless to say, it was a like watch worker bees in a beehive – all on a mission…

… and so it was on night 2 of the whirlwind cruise,  somewhere in between the main dining room and a rendezvous with friends already congregated at their favourite bar, than unexpectedly happened upon the “Captain’s Welcome Party”.   This was not the usual private event in a cordoned off lounge area, but in the main thoroughfare aka the Royal Promenade, where I was met with a glass of champagne and a photo op with the Captain.

Whilst I’d heard him over the PA for the regular 12pm announcement, I was yet to lay eyes on him, and first impressions were WOW!   He’s young, he’s tall and I mean very tall and rather good looking with a well practiced “smile for the camera” pose.

Knowing nothing about him, I set about to find out more…

  • Captain Henrik Loy is his name
  • Loy took over control of the ship on 23 Dec 2016
  • He’s incredibly tall (at least 6’4″)
  • He’s from Norway
  • He’s 41 years old, married to Karina with two young children.
  • He’s currently Captain of the largest ship to ever visit Down Under.

There’s a lot to admire about the commanding officer of the cruise ship you’re sailing on.   We’ve all heard stories of incidents at sea, not just with the weather but with technical issues, medical and of course passenger issues..

I have another person who I have not yet met but would love to one day. Captain Kate McCue.   She’s America’s first female cruise Captain, working with Celebrity Cruises and currently sailing the Caribbean.
